FAMES is a cooperation between the two sensor specialists Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik and Fogale Nanotech for the development and production of "edge sensors" for segmented mirrors such as the M1 of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) from ESO.
High-precision sensors measure the position of the mirror segments in 3 axes respectively to each other with a resolution of < 1 nanometer.
The sensors are designed for long-term measurement stability in "open-air" operation where they are exposed to changing environmental conditions (temperature/humidity).
